AVERAGE TIME for DIAGNOSIS

Updated: Aug 28

We conducted a poll of 295 members of Rise Above Lyme Support group on the length of time it took to get diagnosed.

Out of nearly 300 votes, these results speak volumes on the problem that exists in the medical community. Check out the two articles below.

136 members took 10 to 20 years to get diagnosed.

29 members took 5 to 10 years to get diagnosed

38 members took 3 to 4 years to get diagnosed

58 members took 1 to 2 years to get diagnosed

26 members got diagnosed within a year.

4 members took between 30 to 50 years to get diagnosed.

4 members still trying to get diagnosed.

The problem seen in this poll is it MUST be treated within weeks to prevent becoming chronic. If doctors fail to diagnose and treat in time, if effects the rest of these patient's lives. We must educate them how to recognize symptoms and accurately test.

"Sixty-one per cent of those who responded to the survey by LymeDisease.org reported that it took more than two years for them to receive a correct diagnosis. Only 21% reported being correctly diagnosed within six months of symptom onset."

"In MyLymeData we found that 70% of those with late or chronic Lyme disease experienced years of diagnostic delays even though 45% had presented with early symptoms. It had taken the majority, 3 or more years to be diagnosed after seeing 5 or more doctors with 72% being misdiagnosed and likely unnecessarily treated for another disease."

"45% of patients needed more than three years to obtain the proper diagnosis."
