SOUND SENSITIVITY IN LYME

Updated: Aug 28

"Hyperacusis is a condition where patients can experience an extreme sensitivity to sound. In some patients it is limited to louder sounds, but in more severe cases ordinary sounds can be very debilitating."

"In fact, one study found that out of 85 patients with Lyme disease, 70% reported hypersensitivity to light. And, 48% reported heightened sensitivity to sound.

“The auditory hyperacusis seen in Lyme disease patients can be intense and incapacitating,” the authors point out, adding “in some individuals, even the volume fluctuations in a normal conversation can be noxious.”

"The disease can affect the sensorium via the infection itself and systemic immune effects, changes in neurotransmitter balance, and altered neural pathways, all impacting sensory processing."

"What of the central conditions? Lyme disease is a systemic infection with the tick-borne spirochaeta Borrelia burgdorferi which targets specific body organs including the peripheral and central nervous systems.17 Some caution must be exercised in interpreting reports of hyperacusis because facial palsy can be a feature, hence stapedial reflex dysfunction as described above. There are, however, reports of hyperacusis in Lyme disease without facial nerve dysfunction."

"Especially in the summer months, when we want to get outside and explore, Lyme disease becomes an increasing health threat. A condition transferred to humans through tick bites, Lyme disease is the most widespread vector-borne disease in the United States. Symptoms of Lyme disease commonly include fatigue, headaches, and an irritating skin rash; however, studies have shown that up to 48% percent of late-stage Lyme disease patients also develop hyperacusis."
